The year is 2024, the foam flinging hobby seems to be progressing exceptionally fast lately with a lot of new blasters being released, new technology being introduced, applied and new darts as well. While this is all good for the hobby, we think it is utmost important that we all play our part in improving the safety of the hobby/sport as well. With more events happening around the globe from tournaments to mil-sim, we think it's important for us to practice some safety rules because we don't want any unfortunate and avoidable accident to happen or involving authorities that might led what we are adore being banned.
First of all, it is in our firm belief that hard tip darts have absolutely no place in this hobby. In other words, we strongly CONDEMN the use of hard tip darts, especially in an PvP environment.
With the rapid development of much safer soft tip dart and even China have fully transitioned to use only soft tips dart, we believe all of us should do the same. Apart from getting your fellow foam flinging mates hurt, there's simply no extra benefit of using a hard tip dart. We personally have bled during games due to the usage of hard tip dart and we believe a lot of clubs out there have also outright banned hard tip dart and that's good for the hobby overall. Hence, we STRONGLY suggest that all responsible organizers to strictly enforce this rule for everyone's safety.
Second, FPS is basically a d*** measuring contest in this hobby and frankly speaking it is quite pointless, FPS or feet-per-second is only one of the metrics to measure the performance of a blaster. It's very easy to cheat by using a lighter weight dart or some weird, unusual dart. Same goes to event where you can feed a bad dart or a much heavier dart to bring down the FPS during chrono test. To standardize the FPS cap testing, we suggest that all monitored testing and FPS cap should be rated with 1g dart (AF PRO/Worker Gen2/Gen3) which is widely available and standard to the hobby. Using a heavier dart (1.2g for example) while still maintaining say a 200FPS cap, means the blaster will have much more muzzle energy than a 1g @ 200FPS. If you swap in a 1g dart, the blaster will perform at 220-230FPS which exceeded the limit. Hence, we suggest keeping the testing to 1g dart, while players are free to swap to lighter or heavier weight dart which will balance out the final muzzle energy. Here in Monkee Mods, we always try to advertise FPS number using Worker Gen2/Gen3 unless stated otherwise because, using bamboo or even super light dart is just "cheating" on FPS number. There's been a few videos on this topic, and we believe all of you should be well informed.
Furthermore, to make our stance on promoting a safer hobby, we have decided to enforce this to any events we are participating in. If the event fails to adhere to these rules, we will not be part of it. We will be also sponsoring darts (for the events we are sponsoring) for chrono test to keep everything consistent. We will only participate in the event that agrees to:
1) Keeping FPS cap below 300FPS @ 1g
2) Ban hard tip dart (only allow soft tip dart)
3) Chrono test to be done with 1g dart
We believe it is our responsibility to create a safe environment for all of our fellow foam flinging mates, so that we all can have fun flinging foam at each other without worrying about losing a damn eye. While we understand that pushing performance is one of the key aspects of the hobby, we hope manufacturers, modders and sellers alike can push for development on different and many other aspects of the hobby. By making it more affordable, more reliable and more accurate instead of chasing some number that risks the whole hobby being classified as a weapon instead of a toy.
Stay safe and happy foam flinging!
